Halo of Ashes has the weight of a hard-rock song and the movement of something far stranger. The guitars circle rather than simply charge, while Mark Lanegan gives the melody a dark, steady centre. Dust puts Screaming Trees' psychedelic instincts inside some of their clearest songwriting. All I Know is a particularly strong example. The hook is immediate, but the layers around it keep the song from becoming a straightforward radio-rock exercise…
