Puzzle
Puzzle makes Biffy Clyro's music easier to follow without removing all of its unusual edges. The choruses are broader and the arrangements more direct, but the guitars still have an awkward energy. Strings, choir and quieter passages give the record a wider range of sounds, helping the strongest songs feel substantial rather than simply louder.
Living Is a Problem Because Everything Dies makes an ambitious opening. Strings and choral voices surround the band's stop-start attack, creating a dramatic introduction before the song settles into its vocal section. It is an effective example of the album's appeal: the arrangement has plenty happening inside it, yet the melody remains clear.
Saturday Superhouse takes a shorter route to its hook. Its directness works because the band retain enough movement in the playing to keep the song lively. Who's Got a Match? has a more unusual pop character, while Semi-Mental brings some of the band's restless instrumental side into a compact shape.
The softer singing is just as important. As Dust Dances makes an early space for it, and The Conversation Is... places higher, gentler vocal lines against a much heavier guitar opening. That contrast can be striking, although the smooth chorus also shows how close the band move towards a more familiar mainstream rock sound.
Now I'm Everyone adds saxophone to the palette. Near the end, 9/15ths returns to the choir and strings with a much darker sense of scale. Machines then closes with acoustic guitar and restrained accompaniment, allowing the singing to carry the song's feeling without another large instrumental climax.
Not every simpler section has the same character. Some group choruses and straightforward arrangements feel less distinctive than the best material around them. The record occasionally gains accessibility at the expense of surprise.
Even with those limits, Puzzle brings together memorable melodies and enough musical detail to remain engaging. Its strongest moments use the larger arrangements to strengthen the songs, while the quieter performances give the more dramatic passages a convincing contrast.
