Album review: 'Unto the Locust' by Machine Head

Unto the Locust

Seven tracks give Machine Head enough space for a substantial statement on Unto the Locust. The songs are long, but their strongest ideas are easy to identify: a clear guitar melody, a forceful rhythmic shift or a vocal line that can carry a large arrangement. The record sounds ambitious without losing its interest in a memorable hook.

I Am Hell (Sonata in C#) begins with an unusually formal vocal introduction before the heavier sections establish the band's familiar attack. The different movements make the opening feel like a complete journey. The arrangement has clear stages, and the guitars keep supplying reasons to follow them.

Be Still and Know brings a particularly strong melodic guitar line into a tighter structure. Robb Flynn and Phil Demmel sound closely connected, with their harmonies adding lift to the heavier rhythm playing. Dave McClain's drums reinforce the changes without turning every transition into a separate event.

Locust makes effective use of Flynn's contrasting vocal approaches. The quieter singing gives the heavier chorus an emotional point of departure, while the guitars develop their own shapes around it. The song is direct enough to remember even when the instrumental detail becomes elaborate. That balance is one of the album's main strengths.

Darkness Within opens a more exposed space through acoustic guitar and a restrained vocal. Its gradual growth works because the melody remains convincing before the extra weight arrives. The record's emotional range becomes clearer here, beyond the anger that dominates much of Flynn's delivery.

The grand gestures are not equally successful. The children's voices introducing Who We Are make its message very explicit, and some listeners may find the sentiment too heavily underlined. The song's guitar work is more persuasive than that framing. This Is the End also benefits from the contrast between quick attack and broader melody. Across the album, Machine Head earn much of their scale through strong internal detail, with the best songs giving the impressive performances a clear emotional destination.
