Luminiferous Aether
Luminiferous Aether creates atmospheric black metal through its guitars rather than adding atmosphere afterwards. The sound is spacious and richly layered, but the riffs remain important. Mare Cognitum use melody, repetition and movement between heavier and lighter passages to hold five long songs together.
The First Point Of Aries shows how strong the lead guitar work is. Melodies move above the harder foundation without feeling like a separate detour. The guitar layers have clear places and keyboards mainly stay in the background. Space develops through the playing rather than an extra layer covering all the details.
Constellation Hipparchia brings more immediately recognisable riffs. Short, sharply struck chords alternate with quicker guitar lines. This gives the song a useful rhythmic centre while the rest of the music can move more freely around it. Melody is never pushed so far forwards that everything behind it disappears.
Occultated Temporal Dimensions chooses a darker and more aggressive approach. Individual riffs are less easy to remember here, but the change in character matters to the album. It prevents every long development from arriving at the same kind of result. The second half asks for more concentration than the opening and earlier melodic passages.
This is music which takes its time to explain each idea. The layered production and extended forms can occasionally feel a little too grand. The writing generally remains convincing, however, because strong playing supports the atmosphere. Luminiferous Aether retains black metal's aggression while leaving plenty of room for melody. It works particularly well for listeners who enjoy following long songs where small shifts gradually make a clear difference. Its scale serves the individual parts instead of replacing them.
