Periphery V: Djent Is Not a Genre
The jazz passage in Wildfire is a revealing interruption. After an intense opening of low guitar attacks and harsh singing, Periphery introduce piano and saxophone without making the tension disappear. The change is strange, but it belongs to the song's unsettled character. Periphery V: Djent Is Not a Genre repeatedly uses that kind of contrast to test how much a heavy song can contain.
The opening track still has a strong melodic centre, with Spencer Sotelo's clean chorus providing a point of return. Atropos gives that vocal approach more room before moving into a darker and more abrasive section. The three guitars create a detailed framework around those changes, and Matt Halpern's drums make the transitions feel deliberate. The musicianship is exceptionally controlled, though the real attraction is how clearly the strongest arrangements communicate their changes in mood.
Wax Wings is the most convincing example. Its flowing guitar lines create a more open atmosphere, and the vocal performance develops towards a large emotional release. Piano adds another perspective without distracting from the song. Everything Is Fine! moves in the opposite direction, using distorted effects and forceful drumming to make the attack feel unstable. The quieter electronic setting of Silhouette then offers a complete change of scale. It is effective as contrast, although its simpler construction feels less distinctive than the surrounding guitar writing.
The closing sequence returns to extended forms. Zagreus brings together harsh rhythm and a more spacious bridge, while Dracul Gras develops its low, dark guitar ideas through a larger dramatic arrangement. Some transitions demand attention without offering an equally memorable idea in return. Thanks Nobuo provides a clearer emotional destination through its recurring melody and sustained closing atmosphere. The album's argument is strongest in moments like that, when the technical detail becomes part of a song with a recognisable direction. Periphery make their stylistic range feel substantial by allowing the heavy, melodic and electronic elements to affect one another, with the best tracks finding a clear identity inside the abundance.
