Album review: 'Chapter V' by Staind

Chapter V

The guitar details are what keep Chapter V interesting. Aaron Lewis brings the familiar emotional pressure, but Mike Mushok often supplies a second line of thought around him. A harmonic, a brief lead passage or an unusual texture can give a song an identity beyond the subject of its words.

Right Here makes that partnership work particularly well. The guitar's ringing notes create space around the acoustic strumming, while the bass and drums give the melody a firm foundation. Lewis has a strong chorus to sing, and the band lets the song develop through changes in weight rather than simply making every return louder.

Take This is another good example. Its low bass opening and wavering guitar sound establish an atmosphere before the vocal takes over. The gradual lift feels earned because the quieter playing has already provided something worth following. The arrangement makes an emotional point alongside the singer, which is a valuable distinction on an album so closely tied to his perspective.

Staind also regain some momentum on Falling. The more active pace suits its concern with trying again after a setback. Paper Jesus and King of All Excuses bring a heavier attack, with the latter using its low guitar sound to give the anger a physical shape. These tracks help the record move between reflection and confrontation.

The quieter material is less consistent. Lewis can make a simple line sound urgent, but several songs place very similar demands on that gift. The extended inward gaze of Devil needs more melodic movement than it receives, and the opening Run Away does not establish as clear a character as the tracks that follow it.

Chapter V is strongest when Staind let the whole band carry the feeling. Its best songs contain enough small instrumental choices to reward attention beyond the chorus. The album still spends a lot of time inside one emotional register, but Right Here and Take This show how much more expressive that register becomes when the guitars have room to answer back.
