Album review: 'BE NOT AFRAID' by Polyphia

BE NOT AFRAID

Polyphia have never treated the guitar as an instrument that needs to stay in its own lane. BE NOT AFRAID takes that attitude further, placing their precise playing inside a dark world of bass, synths and chopped vocal samples. There are no guest stars to steer the songs in different directions this time. The band commit to a recognisable sound, and the album feels more connected because of it.

LET THERE BE LIGHT and WITH EYES TO SEE introduce that sound quickly. The guitar lines still twist through small spaces, but they often work as part of the production rather than sitting above it. Heavy electronic pulses give the music a physical weight that technical ability alone cannot provide. It is an interesting shift for a band whose playing can so easily become the whole story.

CAN YOU FEEL IT makes the best case for this approach. Its groove leaves enough room for the guitar detail, so the busy parts add character without breaking the momentum. J-BOMB offers another useful change in texture, bringing familiar, lighter guitar sounds into an album that often prefers darker colours.

The balance is less convincing when every part competes for attention. Some of the bass and compression push the guitar into the background, and THEY KNOW NOT WHAT THEY DO becomes crowded as it develops. The consistent palette also means that individual tracks sometimes blur together. A little more space would make the strongest ideas hit harder.

Even with those limits, BE NOT AFRAID gives Polyphia a clear direction. It works best when the band treat their skill as one ingredient in a song. Fans who want the guitar right at the front may need to adjust, but the combination of rhythmic detail and electronic weight gives the record plenty to explore.
