Emergence
Emergence puts the heavier side of Godsticks near the centre. The guitar riffs are substantial, the rhythms are tightly controlled and Darran Charles keeps a recognisable melodic voice above the activity. It is a focused progressive-rock record with considerable force, though that focus sometimes limits the variety between its songs.
Below the Belt establishes the approach quickly. Short, hard guitar phrases combine with a strong rhythmic foundation, while the vocal sounds more relaxed than the music underneath it. The later stop-start playing adds another level of detail without removing the track's direct appeal.
Much Sinister introduces a funkier movement and more layered singing. Exit Stage Right is more urgent, using faster playing and a heavier guitar setting around a melody that Charles continues to lead clearly. The contrast between his delivery and the instrumental pressure gives the band a distinct character.
All That Remains provides an important pause. Acoustic guitar, softer percussion and strings support a gentler vocal exchange, giving the album a more intimate setting.
One Percent returns to stronger riffs and a particularly effective rhythmic shape. The title track takes the guitar playing further, balancing a more restless performance with a controlled foundation.
Leave or Be Left offers a brief, darker introduction to Lack of Scrutiny. The closing piece opens the arrangement more widely, with horns and changing guitar patterns adding colour around the voice. It gives the album a more ambitious ending without completely abandoning its heavier identity.
The main weakness is the consistency of the sound. Some tracks occupy similar ground, and the reduced range of textures can make the middle stretches feel less individual. The playing remains strong, but a few more contrasting arrangements would give its best ideas greater emphasis.
Even with that reservation, Emergence is a convincing heavy-rock statement. Its strongest songs combine memorable shapes with precise ensemble playing, offering more than a collection of powerful riffs.
