Inescapable
Inescapable combines the heavy rhythms of Godsticks with a stronger emphasis on melody. The guitars can be sharp and forceful, but the arrangements also leave room for a more exposed vocal. That contrast produces several strong songs, even if the polished sound and familiar approach sometimes limit their impact.
Denigrate makes an effective introduction. A hard riff gives way to a quieter setting before the chorus brings the force back. The shifts create a useful tension, with the guitar solo adding another part of the song rather than simply following the same level of intensity throughout.
Victim takes a more patient route. Its unsettled atmosphere allows the voice to remain near the centre, building pressure through restraint. Surrender is more immediately melodic, though the changing placement of the chords and the movement beneath the singing keep it from becoming a completely straightforward rock song.
The heavier material has plenty of character. Relief uses a threatening guitar rhythm, while Resist pushes the playing towards a more aggressive progressive-metal setting.
Change gives the group more room to develop. Its quiet opening gradually leads towards a much heavier performance, making the contrast part of the composition's shape.
Breathe offers another appealing change in texture. Its lighter atmosphere and clear melody provide some relief from the surrounding weight. Time returns to a more awkward, forceful rhythm, showing how closely the band's melodic and heavier instincts remain connected.
There are reservations. Some of the hooks feel carefully constructed rather than natural, and the guitar playing can become more impressive than emotionally involving. The vocal performance brings the music together, but the smooth finish does not always help its darker character.
Inescapable is strongest when its arrangements allow tension and melody to develop together. It is an accomplished, often engaging record with enough distinctive playing to rise above its more familiar moments, while leaving room for a less controlled approach.
