Faced with Rage
Faced with Rage gives Godsticks' heavy guitar sound a wider emotional range. The riffs remain forceful, but the songs find more space for atmosphere and melody. Darran Charles sounds assured above the busy arrangements, while the expanded band give the instrumental passages a clear sense of purpose. The strongest moments make the weight feel connected to the writing.
Hard to Face is an effective example of the darker approach. Its descending chords create an unsettled mood, allowing the voice to carry more than simple aggression. Open Your Eyes brings a firmer groove, with a heavy riff that gives the song an immediate point of connection.
Avenge is more forceful, but its mournful melody keeps the performance from becoming one-dimensional. The playing can be technically demanding without removing the song's direct appeal.
Revere and We Are Leaving provide some of the best vocal moments. Their melodies make the quieter emotions clear, with the latter developing patiently around an especially exposed performance.
Angry Concern offers a heavier, more troubled setting, with substantial bass and an eerie melodic character. Everdrive then allows the musicians to stretch further. Its complicated rhythm still has a strong groove, giving the extended instrumental playing a direction rather than leaving it as a collection of solos.
The technical activity is also the main reservation. Some passages give the guitar more space than the song needs, and the expressive singing will not appeal equally to every listener. The music is most convincing when those abilities are held inside a clear arrangement.
Fame and Silence brings the sequence to a suitably unsettled close. Faced with Rage succeeds because it gives anger several different musical shapes, rather than simply making each song louder. Its best performances combine melody, tension and a strong band sound, making this a substantial development of Godsticks' heavier identity.
