No Feeling Is Final
No Feeling Is Final gives Maybeshewill's return a broad, carefully arranged sound. Guitars still have an important role, but strings, keyboards, brass and electronics help carry the record's changing moods. Its concern with a damaged world is clear, yet the music keeps making room for hope. The strongest pieces make that movement feel musical rather than simply suggested by the album title.
We've Arrived at the Burning Building begins with a low electronic presence, drums and repeating piano. The arrangement gradually becomes more forceful, establishing both the scale and the unease of what follows. Zarah gives the environmental theme a more explicit voice through its spoken sample, while the surrounding instruments keep the track connected to the rest of the record.
Refuturing is particularly effective. Its piano and strings move around the rhythm before Marcus Joseph's saxophone adds warmth to the closing passage. The combination broadens the band's sound without making it feel crowded. Complicity and The Last Hours also use changes in rhythm to keep their development from becoming entirely predictable.
The Last Hours finds a strong shape in its larger movements. A growing arrangement gives way to a quieter, more open section, then rebuilds with renewed force. Even Tide offers a different texture through trumpet and electronic percussion. These details matter because the album is often working towards similar emotional contrasts, so a change in instrumental colour can make a substantial difference.
That richness does not keep every passage equally engaging. The record sometimes settles into a familiar kind of cinematic atmosphere, and parts of its later sequence feel less distinctive than the opening stretch. The care in the recording remains clear, but the amount of detail can make the individual ideas harder to separate.
Tomorrow closes with a gentle piano melody and birdsong, offering relief after the busier arrangements. It is a simple and effective finish. No Feeling Is Final works best when Maybeshewill give their wider instrumental palette a clear purpose. Much of the record does that convincingly, finding warmth and movement inside a serious subject without pretending that its tension has disappeared.
