Album review: 'The Joy of Motion' by Animals as Leaders

The Joy of Motion

The groove in Physical Education gives The Joy of Motion an immediate point of entry. Animals as Leaders make the guitar feel percussive without losing its melodic role, using short, sharply placed notes to create a rhythm that is complicated and easy to enjoy. The technical work is remarkable, but the track's character comes from how naturally it moves.

Tosin Abasi and Javier Reyes share the guitar space with unusual flexibility. A low rhythmic figure can become a lighter chord pattern, while a lead line may act as a brief response rather than a continuous solo. Matt Garstka's drums help those changes stay connected. His playing has enough detail to remain interesting on its own, yet it usually makes the guitar arrangement easier to understand. The trio sound aware of one another rather than simply impressive in parallel.

Another Year brings the jazz influence into a warmer, more relaxed setting. Its melody has a clear shape, and the rhythmic detail adds lift instead of interrupting the flow. Air Chrysalis uses atmosphere more gradually, allowing sustained tones and heavier passages to change the scale of the piece. The nylon-string character of Para Mexer introduces another valuable texture, widening the album's sound without making the sequence feel fragmented. These contrasts give the music a sense of curiosity that remains accessible beyond the difficulty of the playing.

The quieter passages can occasionally reduce the tension so much that a piece feels more pleasant than distinctive. Some listeners may also find the very clean instrumental sound emotionally distant. The strongest tracks answer those reservations through memorable phrases and a clear internal movement. The Future That Awaited Me is especially effective at making a melodic idea hold its place inside the changing rhythm. The album's achievement is the way it turns demanding technique into a welcoming musical language. There is plenty to examine closely, but the best moments do not require analysis to communicate their energy. The pleasure is already present in the way the parts meet.
