Album review: 'Tunnel Blanket' by This Will Destroy You

Tunnel Blanket

Tunnel Blanket takes This Will Destroy You towards a darker, less clearly defined sound. Guitar lines do not always remain easy to pick out. Noise, sustained tones and distortion occupy more space, drawing the band closer to ambient music and drone. Large differences in intensity remain, but the route towards an outburst is less obvious.

Little Smoke begins quietly, gradually gathering tension. The heavy distortion that follows makes the contrast much sharper. It takes time to develop, yet that sudden force gives the long opening a clear purpose.

Communal Blood retains more recognisable post-rock elements. Cymbals and rapidly repeated guitar notes make its sound larger and more direct. Elsewhere, the band loosen the form further. Glass Realms concentrates on tone and slowly changing atmosphere. It can be beautiful, although the movement occasionally feels too slight to hold attention on its own.

On Killed the Lord, Left for the New World, bell-like sounds and a clearer rhythm give the record a different colour. It provides a useful contrast with the denser pieces. Black Dunes increases the pressure again, with several layers and hard drumming almost overwhelming one another.

Not every passage feels equally necessary. The long quiet stretches can lack direction, while some heavier moments recall earlier outbursts. Still, Tunnel Blanket works well when the band explore the relationship between space and density. The more open passages make the rougher sounds feel larger, while the noise changes how those quieter sections register. It asks for patience and offers less immediate guidance than a clear guitar melody would. In return, a strong, unsettled atmosphere makes this different approach worth exploring.
